How Noene helps improve and prevent joint pain? Interview with the chiropodist Xavier Vázquez
We speak to the chiropodist Xavier Vázquez, who has analysed the NOENE material and, for its properties and advantages, uses it diversely in treatments of his patients, especially in athletes and people who suffer from joint pain. Qualified in Chiropody and Nursing, Xavier Vázquez is also a professor at the University of Barcelona, Vice-president of the Spanish Society of Sports Chiropody (SEPOD) and member of the Spanish Society of Biomechanics and Orthopaedics and Podiatry (SEBIOR).

You have been able to study the NOENE material. What have you analysed exactly and what conclusions have you reached?
In a study we made in 2014 at the University of Barcelona we assessed the capacity of propulsion or of dissipating forces of different materials, in order to see which could be better in the treatments we give for different pathologies. In this experiment, with more than 300 materials tested, we observe that NOENE was the one that dissipated the forces the best. This helped us to be very aware when giving treatments for athletes or for people who work many hours standing.
So what is the main characteristic of NOENE?
Its capacity to dissipate forces with a minimum thickness. With just 1 or 2 mm of thickness we can treat different forms of joint pain since Noene dissipates forces that can produce pathologies of the knee, hip of the foot itself. This differentiates it from the materials called cushioners or absorbers, which require a greater thickness, which also means more instability. Moreover, with time these materials gradually lose their absorbent capacity.
So, based on your experience and know-how, in which cases and for who would you recommend the use of the NOENE material?
We can apply the use of NOENE to many situations we come across in our profession. This is the case of athletes, who require a dissipation of forces: on running, the impact causes a force of reaction in the lower limb, starting from the ankle towards the hip, and can even reach the backbone. Other people who can also use them are those who due to their job must spend many hours standing or walking: salespeople, shop assistants, waiters… who are obliged to be moving around all day and who are overloading their joints. We can use NOENE to reduce these impacts, to absorb these forces of negative reaction and minimise joint pain.
Why do these joint pains appear? What happens to our body when we walk and run?
When we take a step or stride we are making the ground return this pressure back to us, with the same force, on our joints and the first one to receive this is the ankle. This causes the inflammation of the area and this can later become small sprains or micro-traumatisms of the parts of the ankle. This also occurs to the knee: inflammation of the knee, inflammation of the kneecap and more frequent traumatisms such as chondromalacia, with which the joint does not function so well and can cause joint pain that may become more or less invalidating. In the hip we come across the same thing: the time comes when these small inflammations can become joint pains such as hip bursitis or iliotibial band in the runner, which will cause us problems not only when undertaking the activity but also later over a period of time, and very often they become residual pathologies.
Today we find many insoles that are made with materials such as gels that give this feeling of absorption. Do these products protect the joints?
There are materials that offer us a lot of comfort initially, such as gels, PPT…, but this cushioning that is so comfortable diminishes as the hours go by, the material becomes compacted, so that it stops working. Moreover, we should be aware that the more cushioning a material is, the more instability it will give us, and this instability in athletes in general, but also in people who use it in everyday life, can cause greater muscle fatigue and this may lead to some pathology or problems such as sprains, joint pains, etc.
In contrast, would you recommend the use of NOENE to athletes?
The use of NOENE is recommendable for any athlete because it helps us reduce, to absorb, these impacts with the ground. We could also specify in runners that the longer the distance of the race, the more interesting its use. This is also the case in other sporting activities that are connected to jumping, speed or changes of direction, where we need to reduce the pressures that joints receive using NOENE.
As a chiropodist you use NOENE in your treatments …
In my surgery, with the patients that come with joint pain, the use of NOENE in treatments has helped me reduce these pathologies and the painful symptoms they brought. So I can say, and confirm, that the use of NOENE in compression pathologies of the joints will help us improve or even avoid injuries and joint pains that could arise as a result of overload and over-effort of these joints.
You also wear NOENE in your shoes …
And since I have worn it I have reduced the pain I had in my knees. As I am also carrying some weight and am at an age that is beginning to be significant, my knees are beginning to complain and including NOENE in my supports has meant a noticeable improvement.
